e-Learning, m-Learning and blended learning
Though there is no concrete definition of e-Learning, in higher education it is generally defined as attending an online module without face-to-face classroom teaching. When e-Learning was first introduced, it was about uploading instructional materials on the learning management systems where students can learn with the Internet technology. With the blooming of advanced web2.0 technology, e-Learning 2.0 is conceptualized with the frequent usages of web2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, RSS, de.lic.ious and podcasting. The pedagogy has been shifting from instructional approach to learners’ participation and collaborative learning under the belief that knowledge is socially constructed. In addition, if the e-Learning is designed with portable devices such as Netbook, PDA and iPod/iPad etc, the learning is classified as m-Learning.
The shifting to e-Learning 2.0 is even encouraging by the cutting edge virtual 3D technology Second Life where a lot of global Universities such as University of Edinburgh, Harvard University and the Open University have participated to construct their learning communities.
Along with the development of e-Learning and m-Learning, blended learning was then emerged. Generally speaking, blending learning is about the combination of face-to-face instruction with learning with technology beyond classroom. Some even defined blended learning as the integration of e-Learning and m-Learning.
Whatever we call it, our focus of interest will be on e-Learning 2.0 achieving the objective of knowledge construction with web 2.0 technology. It is however always necessary to remember nothing can subsitute a face-to-face learning experience.
